HVAC Industry
Starting January 1, 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will enforce stricter regulations, requiring HVAC manufacturers to phase out R-410A refrigerants in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives. This change is driven by the need to reduce the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of refrigerants. R-454B, the new choice for residential and light commercial HVAC systems, has a GWP of 466. This marks a 75% reduction compared to R-410A, which has a GWP of 2,088.
Brewer’s Air Conditioning and Heating is at the forefront of this transition, ensuring customers understand the change and how it benefits both their HVAC systems and the environment.
R-454B is designed to replace R-410A in all residential and light commercial systems. It aligns with the EPA’s GWP threshold of 700, which aims to limit the environmental impact of refrigerants. This transition is not just a regulatory requirement but a shift towards greater sustainability.
If your current system uses R-410A, you may wonder if you need to act now. The good news is that existing systems can continue operating with R-410A until a replacement is necessary. However, once the phase-out is complete, only R-454B-compatible units will be available. Brewer’s AC & Heating can guide you through this process to ensure you’re prepared for the change.
The move from R-410A to R-454B has been expedited compared to previous refrigerant changes. For example, the transition from R-22 to R-410A spanned 15 years. In contrast, the phase-out of R-410A is condensed into just 12 months. This accelerated timeline has created significant challenges for manufacturers, leading to shortages of both R-410A units and the newer R-454B systems.
Brewer’s AC & Heating is working closely with suppliers to mitigate these shortages and ensure customers have access to reliable HVAC solutions.
R-454B offers several benefits beyond its low GWP. It combines the refrigerants R-32 and R-1234yf to create a blend that is efficient, effective, and environmentally conscious. It provides comparable cooling capacity and energy efficiency to R-410A, making it an ideal alternative.
Additionally, R-454B is classified as A2L, meaning it has low toxicity and low flammability. These safety features ensure it meets modern standards for residential and commercial HVAC systems. Brewer’s AC & Heating ensures all new installations meet these safety and efficiency benchmarks.
Understanding this change is the first step. While you don’t need to replace your R-410A system immediately, it’s wise to plan for the future. Here’s how Brewer’s AC & Heating can help:
