Why Is the HVAC Industry Switching from R-410A to R-454B Refrigerant?

Why Is the HVAC Industry Switching from R-410A to R-454B Refrigerant?

Starting January 1, 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforced stricter regulations, requiring HVAC manufacturers to phase out R-410A refrigerants in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives. R-454B, the new choice for residential and light commercial HVAC systems, has a GWP of 466 — a 75% reduction compared to R-410A's GWP of 2,088.

How Does This Impact Your HVAC System?

R-454B is designed to replace R-410A in all residential and light commercial systems. If your current system uses R-410A, existing systems can continue operating with R-410A until a replacement is necessary. However, once the phase-out is complete, only R-454B-compatible units will be available. Brewer's AC & Heating can guide you through this process.

Why is the Transition Happening So Quickly?

The move from R-410A to R-454B has been expedited compared to previous refrigerant changes — condensed into just 12 months versus the 15-year transition from R-22 to R-410A. This accelerated timeline has created significant challenges for manufacturers, leading to shortages of both R-410A units and newer R-454B systems.

What Makes R-454B a Better Choice?

R-454B combines the refrigerants R-32 and R-1234yf to create a blend that is efficient, effective, and environmentally conscious. It provides comparable cooling capacity and energy efficiency to R-410A. Additionally, R-454B is classified as A2L, meaning it has low toxicity and low flammability — features that ensure it meets modern safety standards.
